Welcome! Personal Page for Susan Blew
As many of you know, in 2016 I attempted a solo swim of the English Channel. At that time, my swim was to learn my potential. As a grade schooler, I swam competitively, but upon entering high school in 1966, I was unable to continue my competitive swimming with the boys' swim team in my high school. Title IX passed in 1972 (hurray!).
My English Channel swim in 2016 lasted 10h35m when the wind speeds reached a sustained 30 knots with gusts going to 38 knots. My pilot and crew couldn't easily see me in the water and pulled me. Since then, I had hoped to return. But age and my physical health have intervened in a way that I couldn't have predicted. I've developed exercise-induced asthma limiting my swim time to around 60 - 75 minutes.
Last fall, Bill Wygant, the former president of the South End Rowing Club asked me if I'd like to join an English Channel Relay, and I immediately said yes. For me, I hope that this helps me to close an open chapter in my swimming story. Right now, we believe that we will swim Thursday, Friday or Saturday of this week (6/22 - 6/24). I have been in the Dover area since Saturday with my team.
I'm asking for your help in reaching the stretch goal of raising $5000 for Swim Across America. This will be the 14th time I've participated in SAA.
Over the past fourteen years I've observed the children and their families who have been positively impacted by the work done by Dr. Robert Goldsby (UCSF) and Dr. Julie Saba (Children's Hospital Research Center Oakland). SAA San Francisco has donated many millions of dollars to their two centers! Please help us to continue to support their work.
Please support me by sponsoring my swim and making a gift. The money you give will go towards cancer research, prevention and treatment and will make an impact in the fight to find a cure.
Thank you for your generosity, and may it lead to a cancer-free world!
