Welcome to My Personal Page
For the past 12 plus years I have participated in Swim Across America as a Swim Angel in honor of my mother, Beatrice Heim who had breast/colon cancer and friends past and present who have/had cancer. Please read these statistics and note them: 1 in 2 men are diagnosed with cancer, 1 in 3 women are diagnosed with cancer, 1 in 5 people are diagnosed with cancer and 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer.
However, this year is different for me. Way different. I now join the group of Breast Cancer survivors. While participating in SAA I have always been inspired by the grit and the ‘get busy living’ attitude of cancer survivors. Their stories are incredible, as is their determination to take each day one at a time and move on. Easier said than done, that is for sure, but when you have such a wonderful community of support and understanding it eases some of the stress and unknown. I credit them for increasing my awareness of cancer and being proactive with seeking help which led to a relatively early detection of my breast cancer. I am in that ‘get busy living’ mode!
I have always participated on Team Susan Survives lead by Susan Helmrich, who is one of my sheroes. She is a 3-time cancer survivor and a very active and speedy United States Masters swimmer, open water and pool national champion. Please feel free to join the “Team” we would be honored to have you! Your donation specifically supports pediatric cancer research at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland and San Francisco—a local charity. 80% of your donation goes directly to this group. Unfortunately funding for pediatric cancer is limited--thus your donation makes a serious difference in supporting a cure for these special, and I mean special kidlets.
For me, asking for donations is out of character as I prefer to volunteer my time and give back in that way as I have over the years. However, this year is different. It is personal. Any support…volunteering and/or donations really does make a difference.
Swim on!!!
