Making Waves to FIGHT Cancer!
Dear Friends and Family,
IS IT JUST ME or do you also have more people in your life with cancer diagnoses? Certainly, approaching 60 yrs old has something to do with it since age is a risk factor for cancer; and we simply know more people at this stage of life. BUT the bottom line is folks are living longer with cancer thanks to less toxic, game-changing drug therapies. Some cancers that were once a lethal diagnosis, are now treated as a chronic disease. Incredible advances have been made, but there is more work to be done which is why I am participating in Seattle's Swim Across America, an open water swim event on September 7th. This will be my 9th year swimming to help fundraise for Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center. Your support in past years has been incredible, thank you!
This benefit swim is so important because it raises dollars that help fund early-stage cancer research and clinical trials. The researchers we are funding are in our community and are the next generation of cancer pioneers. Without Swim Across America early-stage funding, they are not able to conduct trials that can lead to life-saving breakthroughs.
I have witnessed the hope that a newly diagnosed cancer patient receives at Fred Hutch upon learning that there is a pipeline of new immunotherapy and targeted therapy in development. This arsenal of targeted therapies, which are personalized drugs tailored to the genetic characteristics of the patient's tumor, continues to grow.
I am passionate about this swim. Each stroke is a prayer for all those impacted by cancer and hope for a CURE. This year it is my privilege to swim on Team Ewan with his Dad, Michael & friends. We swim in memory of Ewan and others who will forever inspire us; and we swim to honor family and friends who are courageously fighting cancer.
